The reasons for babies turning their heads down in pregnancy?

In normal cases, by 32 weeks of pregnancy, the head of a baby is facing towards the birth canal. Till this point of time it was easy, for a baby to rotate from head up to head down position during pregnancy termed as cephalic presentation as they were enough space in uterus. These babies tend to position their head down much later, and this is just a few moments before labor begins. This movement from fetal to cephalic presentation is termed as head enlargement.

Why it is deemed important for the babies to turn their head down before delivery?

Labor will be easier and shorter if your baby turns their head upside down as the head of the baby comes out first.

Various types of cephalic presentation?
Vertex Presentation

In singletons this is the most common configuration. The back of the baby usually faces your tummy and the face towards your spine. This is an ideal position for birth as the baby is lined up in such a manner so as to fit the pelvis in an easy manner. The head of the baby is tilted towards the side and this does not cause a problem

Face presentation

If the head happens to be extended, then the face assumes a leading part. This type of presentations is less than 1% of presentations at term and it is common among premature babies. If it happens to be an uncomplete face presentation, the duration of labor is not altered.

Tips on how to get the baby in head down position?

If the baby does not happen to be in cephalic position by week 36, there are some steps that need to be taken so that that a different head down position baby occurs. Do share your plan with a health care professional before you proceed ahead
  • Change to a helpful sitting position – the pelvis needs to be tilted forward and the knees should be never higher than your hips. This works out to be an optimal fetal positioning and it helps your baby to get down in an anterior position with ease
  • Get down to a comfortable position and scrub on the floor. When one is on all fours, it becomes easy for the baby to change his head position and come out of the belly
  • Be active and do not sit in for extended hours at a place. Walking is the best exercise to help the baby turn and be active. With the help of walking movement in pelvis is created which forces the baby to turn as the upright stance of the mother provides more room which makes it easy to turn effectively
  • When you are sitting in a car use a cushion to ensure that the knees come under your hips
  •  Lean over a birthing ball when you are using your computer or watching TV
  • There is no need to worry for getting into a perfect position when you are sleeping. Always try to sleep on the left side.
